About the Trail

The Cynwyd Heritage Trail is a 2.5-mile linear park that runs from the Cynwyd R6 Train Station to the Schuylkill River. So many wonderful things have happened this year to advance the construction of the Trail. The township selected Bryan Hanes and Kim Douglas to produce the design. The final design was presented to the public on January 26th. The public visioning process which the Township held last fall enabled the members of the public and the neighboors to participate in a discussion about their wishes and preferences for the Trail. Generally, the majority of participants indicated a preference for a more naturalistic design, with less public infrastructure, which is thus reflected in the final design as presented. The design envisions two paths, one main 12-foot wide asphalt path and a narrower crushed gravel walking path. The paths will follow the rail-bed from the Cynwyd Station to Barmouth. Then, as the trail passes Barmouth, they diverge from the rail-bed and gently wind along Vine Creek. The designers have the walking path take its own separate route, at times following the asphalt and at times diverging. The Trail will end at Belmont Avenue, passing the Manayunk Bridge and following the Spaventa rail line to Belmont Avenue.
